Graffiti on wood? The finish matters as much as the pigment.

GraffitiMobile assessesgraffiti removal on bare, painted, stained or sealed wood for fences, doors, panels, cladding and exterior elements. The grain, fibres and existing finish determine the workable margin.

Send the surface. The service approach comes after.

The goal is not to make you diagnose the wood. A full view and a few close-ups already show the graffiti, grain, finish and visible condition of the surface.

Idéalement : une vue générale, un gros plan et une photo montrant la surface autour.

Recommended photos: a full view, a close-up of the graffiti and a clear close-up of the grain or finish.

    VariableExisting finish
    Why wood is different

Pigment can enter the grain. The service can also alter the finish.

Wood is not a uniform surface. Its density, grain, ageing and coating determine how far graffiti can be removed without unnecessarily changing the appearance of the surface.

Principle The goal is not to use the most aggressive approach. It is to achieve the best reasonable result without raising the fibres, unnecessarily stripping the finish or creating a discoloured area.
    LEVEL 01
    Graffiti / pigment

Paint or marker first adheres to the visible surface.

    LEVEL 02
    Paint, stain or sealer

The existing coating may be more fragile than the wood underneath.

    LEVEL 03
    Grain

Pores and texture can retain pigment unevenly.

    LEVEL 04
    Fibres

An overly aggressive intervention can raise, mark or erode the visible wood fibres.

Bare, painted, stained or sealed wood

The same graffiti can become five different problems.

The existing finish is often just as important as the wood itself because this visible layer needs to remain consistent after the service.

    01Bare wood

Pigment can penetrate directly into the grain. A colour difference may remain depending on the depth of absorption.

    02Painted wood

The coating may be affected along with the graffiti; touch-up or repainting may sometimes produce a more consistent result.

    03Stained wood

Stain contributes to the appearance of the material. An overly aggressive intervention can create a visibly different area.

    04Varnished / sealed wood

The protective coating may limit absorption, but it must itself be compatible with the proposed intervention.

    05Aged wood

Greyed, dry or eroded fibres generally provide less working margin than newer, well-protected wood.

Context image · wood texture The wood fibres are part of the final result. They should not be treated like a mineral surface.
    What needs to be preserved

Remove the graffiti without creating a new defect in the wood.

The result is not judged only by whether the colour disappears. Roughness, finish and surface uniformity after the service also matter.

    Raised fibres

An overly aggressive action can make the wood rougher and change its appearance.

    Loss of stain or paint

The existing finish can come off with the graffiti when the two layers are strongly bonded.

    Colour variation

Older or weather-exposed wood can react differently in the treated area.

    Overall surface condition

Cracks, dryness, wear and ageing can reduce what is reasonable to do.

    Clean, restore or refinish

The best result is not always “more cleaning.”

On some wood, preserving a consistent appearance can be more important than continuing removal until the fibres or coating are altered.

    Commercial applications

Wood often appears exactly where the building meets the street.

Fences, service doors, panels, decorative cladding and exterior elements can be targeted just as much as a brick or concrete facade.

Multiple materials across the same portfolio?

A property can have brick on the facade, concrete in the garage and wood around access points. The request can remain centralized.

    FAQ · graffiti on wood

Frequently asked questions before sending photos.

Can graffiti be removed from wood without damaging it?
It depends on the wood, finish and pigment. An overly aggressive intervention can raise fibres, remove a coating or create a colour difference.
Can graffiti penetrate the grain of wood?
Yes. Wood is porous and pigment can enter the grain or fibres, especially when the surface is bare or aged.
Is painted wood easier to treat?
Not always. Paint can limit absorption into the wood, but it can also be affected by the intervention. Repainting may sometimes produce a more uniform result.
Can graffiti be removed from a wooden fence?
Yes, depending on the type of wood, its condition and finish. A bare wooden fence and a painted fence may require two very different approaches.
Is pressure washing alone enough to remove graffiti from wood?
Not necessarily. Excessive pressure can raise or erode wood fibres. The surface and its condition should determine the approach rather than pressure alone.
Can graffiti be removed from stained or varnished wood?
It is possible in some situations, but the treatment must be compatible with the stain, varnish or sealer.
When is repainting better than cleaning?
When the surface is already painted and the graffiti or treatment is likely to significantly affect the existing paint, repainting may sometimes produce a more visually consistent result.
Can you begin the assessment from photos?
In many cases, yes. A full view, a close-up of the graffiti and a clear photo of the grain or finish are enough to begin the assessment.
How much does graffiti removal from wood cost?
The price depends on factors such as graffiti size, the type of wood or coating, surface condition, access and the realistic result to target.
Do you serve commercial properties and property managers?
Yes. GraffitiMobile can assess a one-time job or requests from multiple properties within the service area.
